Sometimes a mother’s body needs help to recover from pregnancy and giving birth. Speaking from decades of experience in treating the health issues women face later in life and finding their root causes we can say that consequences of a poor recovery from pregnancy and/or a difficult birth can be profound and last a lifetime.
Many new mothers bring their babies to us to resolve any little difficulties they have or just for a check-up after the birth. Few if any will ask us to check them or help them recover after the birth unless we as practitioners notice something and express our concern about their recovery. It is only then that they will admit it their difficulties. This really needs to change. For us as Osteopaths we believe that not only should every baby have an osteopathic check -up after birth, but so should every postpartum mother.
During pregnancy and especially during labour there are huge neurological, hormonal and physical forces acting on your body. During labour your central and autonomic nervous systems and adrenal glands are working overtime. They can and do, in many women, go into a state of shock. The all muscles of the body are going into severe contractions, especially those of the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and uterus. Pelvic ligaments stretch to allow the parts of the pelvis to separate. All of this can sometimes leave mothers with chronic exhaustion, neurological, adrenal and organ shock, strained and torn muscles and ligaments.
After decades of experience of investigating and treating the root causes the difficulties a women’s body encounters in their lifetime we do see correlations that a poor recovery from pregnancy and giving birth is a major factor in a significant number of problems women experience including:
We cannot over-emphasize the importance for mothers to have a check-up and some treatment. We like to keep an eye on both mother and baby for 3 months postpartum. This is to make sure that mother is fully recovered, and her menstrual cycle has returned to normal. Treatment is aimed to:
This is especially important if there have been any difficulties in labour. These can be:
