If a sports injury is not getting better or is re-occurring every time the athlete returns to his/her sport then it is time to look deeper and elsewhere in the body for the root of the problem.
As athletes, sports people push their bodies to the limit, overstretching ligaments and muscles and picking up injuries. The more severe injuries and concussions which can result from heavy tackles can leave the body neurologically shocked.
The forces of a heavy tackle or impact can be retained as a memory in the body. These force vectors are non-anatomical and non-physiological but they can significant impair biomechanical and physiological function. They are undetectable by machines and devices but can felt by the highly developed palpation skills of an experienced osteopath.
These are all reasons why a healthy athlete may be having difficulty getting rid of a recurring sports injury. When we are young the body can adapt more easily to these stresses and strains but as injuries accumulate and we get older we lose some elasticity and flexibility in the body which impairs healing.
Osteopathy with its whole-body and from birth onwards approach to treatment can get to the root of why a problem is re-occurring. Revisiting seemingly unrelated injuries or illnesses which occurred many years before can often be the key to helping a stubborn or recurring sports injury get better for good.
